We've known for some time now that the Avengers are breaking up; that it was fated to happen was the teaser for the current Avengers: Armageddon event series. While we won't know how until its final issue hits this October in Avengers: Armageddon #5, Marvel has revealed that as part of it, not only will the Avengers fall out with each other, but all of Earth does with the Avengers as well.

Kind of a bad time, huh?

"The point of no return! After the cataclysmic events of Avengers: Armageddon #4, the world is torn asunder. Humanity turns against super heroes," reads Marvel's description for Avengers: Armageddon #5, announced during the Avengers: Armageddon panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2026.

It's tough not to read between the lines of that and find some synchronicity in how the general public isn't as optimistic and invested in MCU super heroes in the past six years or so. That's even as this winter sees the return of the Avengers movie franchise, whose previous movie installment was seen by many as the high-water mark for the MCU.

But here in the storylines of Marvel Comics, it's somehow related to a battle between the Avengers and the Red Hulk, and an unpredictable catalyst named David Colton (a former Captain America) who Marvel has said has "unrivaled power" over anyone in the Marvel U.

"And for David Colton, what is the price of all that great power?" continues Marvel's Avengers: Armageddon #5 description. "See where the pieces fall in preparation for Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s AVENGERS #1!"

The Avengers comic relaunch will feature a revived Avengers team out to "avenge the Marvel Universe"... speaking as if something major happened to it, and that the public at large on Earth "has more reason than ever not to trust them."

Surely this fallout between humanity and Avengers in Marvel Comics' ongoing storyline is just the second act of a broader story in which the prominent superhero team will once again curry favor with the public. But it's interesting to think.... what would a world be like if superheroes were "hated and feared" in much the same way Marvel's mutants are, while the X-Men fill the void as Earth's main superhero team?

Avengers: Armageddon #1 and #2 are available now, with issues #3, #4, and #5 releasing monthly through October 21. Then the Avengers relaunch series will follow right after.
