If you thought the Gundam series had done everything already, you need to expand your expectations because Bandai Namco Filmworks is clearly dedicated to trying everything possible with Mobile Suit Gundam. That includes taking a dip into the world of VR with their upcoming anime film, Mobile Suit Gundam Silver Phantom.
At Anime Expo 2024, Bandai Namco revealed the key art and new trailer for the VR anime film, which promises to turn the viewer into the protagonist of the story. It is a bit of a confusing concept because Pierre Zandrowicz of Atlas V, the French company partnering with Sunrise to make the movie, assured fans that “This is not a game, nor is it just a narrative experience – it’s an immersive adventure that leverages the best of both worlds.”
What exactly that means is somewhat unclear, though the first trailer shows a bit of what Zandrowicz was talking about. Mobile Suit Gundam Silver Phantom is set in the Universal Century 0096, which puts it in continuity with the rest of the mainline Gundam universe. The trailer shows some elements of a VR game, with trackers guiding the player’s perspective as the action unfolds around them, but it seems to be a mostly narrative experience. We won’t find out how well the world of Mobile Suit Gundam translates into VR until the movie is finally out.
We don’t have a specific release date for Mobile Suit Gundam Silver Phantom just yet, but we do know that it will come out this Fall and will be available on the Meta Quest VR headset.
