It has been a lifetime since anime fans have been in Daten City, but the wait is finally almost over as Studio Trigger has confirmed that Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is back with a new season. More than 14 years after the first season ended on a bizarre yet totally appropriate cliffhanger, the chaotic Anarchy Sisters are finally coming back.
The announcement came at Trigger’s Anime Expo 2024 panel, which, somewhat ironically, was almost exactly two years since the studio first announced that they were working on Panty & Stocking season two and exactly one year since they shared the first video of the new anime. However, due to the tangled web of ownership rights caused by the collapse of Gainax, they have been unbearably slow at giving us any more details until now.
In addition to revealing the new logo and key visual for Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt season two, Trigger also shared that a host of key staff from the first season are returning to work on the project, including Hiroyuki Imaishi as director, Hiromi Wakabayashi as writer and concept planner, and Atsushi Nishigori as original character designer. They also confirmed that Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt season two would debut sometime in 2025. The staff at the Anime Expo panel stopped well short of giving a more specific release window, but it seemed like they were working toward finishing all the episodes before the end of 2024, so it could be earlier rather than later in the year.
The second season of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt has been confirmed to follow directly from the ending of the first season, where Stocking revealed she is actually a demon and cut Stocking into 666 tiny pieces before leaving Daten City. Of course, the show was known for playing fast and loose with continuity – at one point the entire cast was turned into zombies despite that never being brought up again – so we’ll have till Panty & Stocking season two comes out in 2025 to see how quickly they choose to abandon that plotline.
