Christopher Reeve documentary Super/Man coming from Warner Bros. Discovery, but release plans are unclear

Is a straight-to-streaming release really enough for this one?

After an extensive bidding war, Warner Bros. Discovery has secured the rights to Super/Man, a documentary that examines the life and career of Christopher Reeve and his rise to stardom as the Man of Steel.

One of the hottest packages coming from the latest edition of Sundance, Super/Man is an extensive look at the life of the late Christopher Reeve. Before the movie was even screened in Park City for audiences and buyers, "several studios and streamers were already planning to bid aggressively to land rights," according to Variety. The mix included companies such as Neon and Netflix, but Warner Bros. Discovery came out on top.

Of course, Warners securing the rights to this up-close look at Reeve's life and his post-accident struggles makes total sense, as the actor is best known for playing the Man of Steel in the four Superman movies the studio produced in the 1970s and '80s. The timing might also work in the studio's favor, as they're releasing James Gunn's Superman: Legacy next year.

At the same time, however, some fans might feel iffy about the whole deal, as last year's The Flash movie included a (highly criticized) CGI cameo of Reeve's Superman, seemingly created without involving his children in the process. On the other hand, the actor's family did participate in the Super/Man documentary, which doesn't shy away from the most tragic parts of his personal story.

A release window for the documentary hasn't been shared yet, but Variety's piece claims that "WBD's DC Studios. Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, HBO, CNN Films and Max will collaborate on the film's global release across theatrical and home viewing release windows." Thus we might be looking at different plans depending on each territory's unique market conditions.
