The Netflix for comics service GlobalComix just got bigger in deal with DC for Batman, Catwoman, Sweet Tooth, and more

Want to read a variety of comics from a variety of publishers for one flat fee? GlobalComix has it - now with DC comics, even

Now, there's even one more way to read DC Comics.

DC Comics has partnered with the digital comics platform GlobalComix to bring some of its most popular storylines to the subscription platform. Launching today across GlobalComix's various apps and website, over 100 DC comics storylines have been added, including:

  • Tom King's complete Batman run
  • Joëlle Jones' complete Catwoman run
  • The original Vertigo era Doom Patrol series featuring work by writer Grant Morrison
  • James Tynion IV's complete Joker run
  • Jeff Lemire's full Sweet Tooth series

Think of GlobalComix like Netflix, but for comics. For one flat fee - $7.99 a month or $89.99 a year - you can read comics from a variety of publishers. While DC and some other publishers own their own digital comics platforms, GlobalComix has a variety of publishers as opposed to the singular focus of something like DC's DC Universe Infinite. The GlobalComix app is available for IOS and Google devices, and the website works as a reader as well.

At this time, the DC/GlobalComix deal is focusing on their backlist titles and not new - or even recent - releases.

"DC is responsible for some of the most respected and revered pop culture icons and we are thrilled to offer hundreds of their iconic stories to our readers across the globe," says GlobalComix CEO Christopher Carter in the announcement. "With 400 books totaling approximately 75,000 pages, DC and DC Vertigo fans will have a wealth of content at their fingertips."

For DC, this is about broadening its reach to more readers. As comics on the GlobalComix app aren't sold on an individual basis but rather by subscription, this isn't so much about individual sales but instead individual readers and perhaps turning them into more regular customers of new comics sold individually (in print or through other online platforms) or converting them to DC's -inhouse digital comics platform DC Universe Infinity, which has a much broader library.

With the deal with DC, GlobalComix now has a deal with many of the major comic publishers including Image Comics, Andrews McMeel, Dark Horse, and BOOM! Studios (a division of Penguin Random House). The notable holdouts would be Marvel, VIZ Media, and four of the 'big 5' in book trade comics publishers Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Macmillan Publishers, and Simon & Schuster. While some would say some of these have a competing product such as VIZ's manga app, publishers like DC and Dark Horse have their own proprietary digital comics app as well but still are distributing select titles with GlobalComix.

GlobalComix is following up this announcement with their debut as a exhibitor at New York Comic Con 2024 this weekend, at booth #3300.
