The Grinch returns! Dr. Seuss's holiday hater turns vacation villain in new kids graphic novel

You're a relaxed one, Mr. Grinch, as webcomic creator Kaeti Vandorn teaches Dr. Seuss's holiday (anti-)hero how to take things easy

As the song has it, it’s not easy being green, especially if you’re a heel who’s as cuddly as a cactus and as charming as an eel. As if life wasn’t hard enough for the Grinch, it turns out that he doesn’t even know what a vacation is — which is where the first-ever graphic novel starring Dr. Seuss’s iconic character comes in.

In The Grinch Takes A Vacation — written and drawn by Kaeti Vandorn, published by Random House Graphic, and in stores this week — the Grinch goes through another important learning experience: this time, discovering what it means to actually try to take a break and enjoy himself, rather than find his fun ruining other people’s good times.

The official publisher description of the project reads, “It’s vacation time in Whoville but The Grinch doesn’t understand… what is a vacation? Determined to learn what the Whos seem so excited about, The Grinch decides to give a vacation a try! Unfortunately the mountains are too snowy, the beach is too sandy and the theme park is too loud… vacations just might not be something that Grinches do? Thankfully, his dog Max isn’t letting the Grinch give up that quickly!”

The Grinch Takes A Vacation is the second in Random House Graphic’s line of Dr. Seuss graphic novels — the first, Cat Out of Water (starring the Cat in the Hat, of course!), came out earlier this summer; a third, by multiple-Eisner Award winner James Kochalka and featuring Sam-I-Am, is due out in 2025 — and comes from webcomic creator Vandorn, who’s also responsible for the graphic novels Monster Friends and Crabapple Trouble.

Wondering what it’s like for the Grinch when he gets to discover one of the true joys of life? The Grinch Takes A Vacation is available in bookstores now… and you can enjoy a preview in the gallery below, to convince you to check it out.
