Late-stage capitalism has been the brutal reality for the past few decades, as the rise of multinational corporations and rampant consumerism has expanded massive economic gaps between the rich and the poor and speeded the ecological collapse brought about by industrialization. But — and go with us here — what if it was somehow more brutal? That’s the question posed by the new satirical graphic novel coming this spring from Oni Press and celebrated creator Patrick Horvath.
Chances are, you’re familiar with Horvath; we here at Popverse were big fans of his IDW series Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, but Free For All is something entirely different: a 56-page look into a world where the rich are forced to fight to the death to maintain their wealth.
Here’s how publisher Oni Press describes the series: “In the future, the World Finance League exists to benefit all, randomly choosing those from among the billionaires and trillionaires of the world and presenting them with a choice: either donate half of their assets to the common good — or defend them in ritual combat. Reigning champion and real estate magnate Ted Brooks has 22 victories under his belt — defending the wealth he schemed and stabbed to get — when he is forced to face his ex-wife, Luella Dominguez, in a fight to the death. Luella has been training, waiting for this moment. But will she have what it takes to defeat the man who would do anything — absolutely anything — to keep his fortune?”
If you think that sounds good, wait until you see the book for yourself… or, even better, take a look through the exclusive preview gallery from the first issue below:
