When a beloved mangaka announces that they are coming out with a new series, it is always worth noting. With the confirmation that Yabako Sandrovich, creator of the Kengan Ashura franchise, is bringing us a fresh martial arts manga, it is bound to get our blood pumping. Even though we don’t know exactly when this new series will be coming out, we can already imagine the possibilities.
The announcement was snuck out during a stream on December 27, 2024. The video’s main focus is the judging of the Battle Comic Award for Manga ONE by Sandrovich, but it briefly confirms that the Kengan Ashura and How Heavy are the Dumbells You Lift? writer is working on his fifth series with his editor. The new series is based on mixed martial arts, judging by the conversation between the writer and editor about different moves that are depicted.
This new series would be the fifth one that Sandrovich has created over the years. Many of them have taken place in the same world, despite having vastly different tones. Kengan Ashura is a serious battle manga with men so ripped that they could face off against Baki without looking ridiculous. Meanwhile, the characters in How Heavy are the Dumbbells You Lift? are a group of high school girls trying to get fit in their spare time in a comedy manga that features gratuitous fanservice. Yet both these series take place in the same universe.
The video didn’t say when the new series would come out or if it would be set in the same universe as Kengan Ashura, but we have to think that at least one or two characters will make their way into a crossover. The world of martial arts is big enough for more than one manga, after all.
