If you've been reading comics or watching anime for any length of time, you know about power levels. It's what separates Marvel's Spider-Man from Galactus, Hunter x Hunter's Gon from Gin, or anything else. How they're sorted, how they're ranked, and how they fare in a match-up are key parts to enjoying the story - and also where some stories go awry. At New York Comic Con, Popverse is going to find out more about this - by asking experts in the field.
Popverse is partnering with WEBTOON to discuss it all in the NYCC 2024 panel titled 'The Art of Leveling Up: Designing Power Systems in Comics, Manga, and Anime.' In the hour-long event, I'll be talking with Apple Black creator WhytManga, unOrdinary creator uru-chan, Just a Goblin's Brandon Chen, and WEBTOON editor Ethan Leblanc about how they create, orchestrate, and control the power dynamics in fiction - specifically in the medium of comics.
I'm looking forward to asking about specific power levels and rankings within their comics and what they've learned along the way that they're using in the comics, manga, and anime they create next. But I'll need your help - come with questions in mind, and I'll give time for a fan Q&A during the panel.
