Jimmy Palmiotti is tired of Marvel Studios forgetting about the comic creators

“We always get a little pissed off when they forget the comic people,” Jimmy Palmiotti says.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the biggest franchises in the world. In an age where theaters are struggling, MCU films regularly break box office records. However, some feel that the creators of the source material get a bum rap. Jimmy Palmiotti is a comic book creator that helped launch the Marvel Knights imprint in 1998. The imprint was a big source of inspiration for the MCU. However, Palmiotti feels that Marvel Studios regularly overlooks him and his fellow comic creators.

During a panel at Dragon Con, Palmiotti spoke about his grievances with Marvel Studios. “I don’t even have a thank you in some of those movies. It’s so sad. Even the Daredevil tv show...not a thank you..nothing. It wasn’t until Echo. That was the first thing they gave me a thank you on.”

Palmiotti acknowledged that the end credits usually have a section for comic creators, but he said that it isn’t enough, and even then, many creators are left off. “It’s just in those 80 names at the end, you want to make sure you’re included in them. I had to make a phone call and be like, ‘Guys, I know Palmiotti is hard to spell, but come on.’”

Palmiotti believes that things are getting better and notes that he was invited to the premiere of Echo.

“It was a highlight of my life, but it would’ve been nice if money came with that. Marvel has changed. They’ve gotten a lot better. But I had to make phone calls once in a while. It’s just a thank you at the end of the things. Throw it on there. The guy who drove one of the secondary actors got a bigger credit…they had a credit!”

“We always get a little pissed off when they forget the comic people. They take all the material, and they put a credit saying written by, and it’s some tv guy. I remember watching She-Hulk and it said who the show was created by. I said, ‘Where’s Stan Lee and John Buscema?’ All the way at the end their names were in the credits. That kind of sucks. These guys were all our heroes growing up. I just want to see them get their credit.”

“It’s not about money. If it was about money we would be doing something else for a living, but we love comics,” Palmiotti concluded.

As Palmiotti noted, things are starting to get better. However, Marvel Studios still has a long way to go. Hopefully things continue to improve, because without these creators, none of these movies or television projects would be possible.
