DC's upcoming New History of the DC Universe isn't a history lesson - it's a chance to smooth out the DC timeline and seed what's to come according to writer Mark Waid. Earlier this month, Popverse's Pierce Lydon spoke with Waid at length about his upcoming DC projects, and when the topic of the New History fo the DC Universe came up Waid stressed that he's also using it as a way to "implant stuff" in the DCU with the "blessing" of DC's editors who run the ship.
"There are revelations in every issue [of the New History of the DC Universe]," says Waid. "I want there to be Easter eggs in every issue that are things that either you thought you knew that you didn't know, or things that might presage some of the events coming up in the DC universe."
Waid says that while the New History of the DC Universe isn't "a promotional tool" for upcoming storylines, it will offer "a different perspective on some of the events, and I'm really happy with the way that's coming together."
Going back to his idea of "things that either you thought you knew that you didn't know," Waid talked vaguely but seemingly very intentionally about "shuffling events" in DC's past with New History fo the DC Universe - and closing the loop on things that in retrospect felt more connected than originally intended.
"Or you see two characters that are very similar and connected, but maybe a year apart or something. You might want to pull them together for that one moment," says Waid. "There's bits and pieces that are not in strict chronological order, but it's covered in the timeline, so make of that what you will."
Yes, we will Mr. Waid.
The New History of the DC Universe #1 (of 4) debuts June 25. will launch June 25.
