It has been a good couple of years for One Piece. The anime’s success continues to bring in new fans around the world, while Netflix has proven that a live-action anime adaptation can be good. In fact, the Netflix series wasn’t just good for existing fans; it has gotten a whole host of new fans hooked on the original manga, according to one of the series’ editors.
It is fair to say that Eiichiro Oda’s manga has been popular for years now, but there has been a surge in sales since the Netflix series introduced people around the world to Luffy and the Straw Hat pirates. A recent news story (whose headline was translated by a fan on social media) quoted a One Piece editor as saying that the live-action series gave the manga a boost in sales outside Japan as well as increasing merchandise sales.
While anime viewing is becoming more popular in the West, it is important to remember that all these adaptations are created to drive people toward the original manga. Every episode of the anime and every movie that comes out is meant to increase sales of Oda’s manga. “We want people around the world who haven’t yet encountered [One Piece] to ‘discover’ the original manga, thanks to Netflix and anime streaming,” the One Piece editor said in the article. Manga is big business in Japan and it is only getting bigger.
Netflix didn’t just give us a new way to love One Piece; they brought more people into the series from where it all began.
