Pacific Rim 3 is happening - just no longer as a movie, but as a comic - with Charlie Hunman, John Boyega, and more

The Pacific Rim trilogy is being completed - but not as a movie

The sci-fi big kaiju movie franchise Pacific Rim debuted in a big way. After Guillermo Del Toro's excellent first film back in 2013, it had all the makings of becoming a fully-fledged franchise - and it did with 2018's second film, and even an anime spinoff in the form of Netflix's Pacific Rim: The Black. At the time there were big plans for a third Pacific Rim movie to create a trilogy. Those plans seem to be over... at least as a movie trilogy. Why? Because Pacific Rim 3 is happening - just not as a movie.

Legendary Entertainment, the owners of the Pacific Rim franchise, have announced that series stars Charlie Hunman, John Boyega, and Charlie Day are returning to star in a Pacific Rim comic book framed as the third part in the Pacific Rim trilogy. Pacific Rim: Final Breach is billed as "the official 3 volume graphic novel sequel to Pacific Rim and Pacific Rim: Uprising" and features the official likenesses of Hunman, Boyega, and Day in the comic.

"Humanity faces its ultimate threat as the Precursors unleash a new wave of devastating Kaiju assaults on Earth in Pacific Rim: Final Breach! After years of failed attempts to enter the Anteverse, the trans-dimensional realm from which all Kaiju emerge, Jake Pentecost and Hermann Gottlieb conceive a daring last-ditch plan whose success hinges on finding legendary Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket—the only human being to ever survive behind enemy lines," reads Legendary's description.

"Living in exile off the grid, Raleigh must choose assured annihilation or confront his past and team up with a new generation to pilot the brand-new Gipsy Destroyer, the last Jaeger standing. Tensions escalate and old wounds reopen as the PPDC finally crosses the breach to confront what lies on the other side… It’s time for humanity to meet its true enemy and cancel the apocalypse once and for all."

And while it seems the box office receipts of the second Pacific Rim film made it so financing a third was impractical, for the Pacific Rim 3 comic Legendary is looking to raise funds using Kickstarter - with a goal to raise $99,000 by September 4 to make the project a reality.

Del Toro and Pacific Rim Uprising director Steven DeKnight have both spoken over the years about a third Pacific Rim film, and even a plan for it to lead to connecting it to Legendary's other big sci-fi Kaiju cinematic universe: Godzilla and King Kong's Monsterverse.

"That was actually my long term plan," DeKnight tweeted in 2021. "[Pacific Rim 3] was structured to end in a way that married the two universes."

Pacific Rim: Final Breach is scheduled to debut in 3 parts - part one in October 2025, part two in fall 2026, and part 3 in fall 2027.
