You can't keep a good team down.
Four years after their last comic series ended and six years after their TV show died, Marvel's Runaways are back ... and we kind of have Doctor Doom to thank?
Marvel Comics is bringing back the Runaways title as a five-issue series connected to the current 'One World Under Doom' crossover event. In that event, Doctor Doom has gained control of the world and all the heroes (and villains, and normal people like you and me) have to deal with it. And they're not dealing with it, especially when Doom comes calling for a robot version of himself (known as a Doombat) to return to the fold after rebelling, getting a mind of their own, and joining the Runaways years before.
And thanks in part to Runaways member Nico Minoru's recent animated debut in Disney+'s Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, she's becoming the face of the team (if she wasn't already).

"Marvel’s best and scrappiest found family has seen better days. Nico Minoru has lost her girlfriend, her best friend and her magic," reads Marvel's description of the comic book series. "With Karolina, Chase and Alex all out of the picture, Gert’s doing her best to shake the remaining Runaways out of running on autopilot. But when Doctor Doom tries to reclaim one of their own – Doombot! – it’s time to start running…"
This five-issue Runaways series is being drawn by Elena Casagrande (Black Widow), and written by Rainbow Rowell - yes, the same Rainbow Rowell who is the prose author of the YA hits Slow Dance and Eleanor & Park. And Yes, also the same Rainbow Rowell who wrote an ongoing Runaways comic for Marvel from 2017 to 2021.

“Everyone who knows me knows I will show up for any party the Runaways are invited to,” Rowell says in the Marvel announcement. “They're my all-time faves and my truest love. I can't wait for Runaways fans to see Elena Casagrande's take on the kids -- they look so cool -- and to see Stephanie Hans’ timeless covers. I think we've come up with a really interesting way to weave the Runaways into the 'One World Under Doombot' story, while keeping true to the book's independent spirit."
For Casagrande, she comes to Runaways after her friends Stefano Caselli and Sara Pichelli talked up how fun the team is to draw, and also as a chance to draw her first team book in her 12 year-career.
"This is my first team book, and I'm extremely happy to work on these specific characters,” Casagrande says. “I hope to stay true to the Runaways aesthetic, using the right mood for its unique storytelling. I knew Runaways from friends who worked on them, from Stefano Caselli to Sara Pichelli, and I loved seeing the evolution of the team. I’m excited to bring the fun and joy of the Runaways to their fans!”
Runaways #1 (of 5) will be available June 11 at better book stores and all comic book stores, as well as digitally through various platforms.
