All eyes may be on DC's Superman in 2025 as the franchise gets a reboot from writer/director James Gunn and actor David Corenswet, but our eyes can't help but be distracted by the proverbial "Woman of Tomorrow" that is the new live-action DCU Supergirl. House of the Dragon's Milly Alcock has been cast as the character, who is rumored to debut in 2025's Superman before going on to her own solo film in 2026 - and recently Gunn (who is also co-head of DC Studios) spoke about the Supergirl movie, and how its not only based on comics, but a very specific comic.
“It’s very much based on Tom King’s comic Woman of Tomorrow," Gunn said recently at New York Comic Con 2024, speaking of the series King wrote with artist Bilquis Evely. "There are of course differences, because it’s a three-act structure, so it’s a little bit different in the structure which kind of goes through various stories. But it has all those major characters and major themes. Supergirl is a mess. It’s something I can’t wait for people to see. I think it’s a completely different unique take on a superhero."
The writer of that comic, Tom King, has a large role in Gunn's plans for DC Studios. Although he hasn't been announced as having a formal role in the Supergirl movie, he has been named one of Gunn's architects for the big picture vision of the DC cinematic universe, and is also an executive producer/writer of the live-action Lanterns TV series. When we reached out to him, he said he's very "proud" of the comic and has high hopes for the movie as he sees it being developed.
"I couldn't be more excited DC Studios is bringing Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow to the big screen," King tells Popverse. I'm so proud of the story Bliquis and I told, and, of course, I hope the movie gets people to check out the graphic novel. That book is a gift, and I'm incredibly thankful to have been part of it."
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled to hit theaters June 26, 2026 - but Milly Alcock is primed to debut as Supergirl in July 11, 2025's Superman movie.
