The Boys' Garth Ennis imagines a nuclear war future in New York City with Becky Cloonan called The War

"As the world around us slides further into ruin, what better time to revisit the cheery subject of atomic obliteration?," Garth Ennis tells Popverse when talking about The War.

What would you do if you were faced with the threat of the end of the world as we know it? Two of our favorite creators, Garth Ennis (Preacher) and Becky Cloonan (Somna), are delving into that in a new series for BOOM! Studios called The War - an eerily prescient story about a group of friends trying to survive in the wake of nuclear war.

"As the world around us slides further into ruin, what better time to revisit the cheery subject of atomic obliteration?" Ennis tells Popverse. "And who better to accompany me on this joyous journey than the wonderfully talented Becky Cloonan?"

The War is set in New York City - a town Ennis and Cloonan know well. Although both were born in Europe, they came to call NYC home individually for years.

"In New York City, a group of friends watch their fears become reality as they face the immediate threat of nuclear war," reads BOOM!'s description of the series. "Everyone has a different plan for survival as the end of the world…who will live? Who will die? And will any truly survive the war..."

The War spins out of the duo's short stories of the same name, published in the recently collected horror anthology Hello Darkness. Those stories form the oversized first issue of The War limited series, with subsequent ones delving into Ennis and Cloonan's story further.

Cloonan is drawing the series as well as its main covers, with the first issue featuring variant covers from her Somna collaborator Tula Lotay, as well as Trevor Hairsine (DCeased) and Jay Shaw (Evil Empire).

The War debuts July 30 from BOOM! Studios.
