Todd McFarlane explains why Spawn is “the cheapest book" in the comics industry at $2.99 after all these years

He just doesn't need the money!

If you are an avid reader of monthly comics, you’ll know that comics can be an expensive hobby – especially now that individual books can cost five bucks or more a month. Todd McFarlane's comics are at a lower price point for one simple reason.

Before introducing the Spawn universe’s current slate at his panel on Thursday at San Diego Comic Con 2024, Spawn creator McFarlane pointed out to the audience that “I’ve got the cheapest book in the marketplace” at $2.99. The reason for that, McFarlane shared, “is simple - I don’t need the money.”

The comic creator talked about what it means to have a broad and loyal audience, and emphasized that he thinks it's more important to have more eyes on the work at a lower price point than fewer at a high price point. Plus, it's a good deal for the fans, McFarlane shared.

“You guys have literally been loyal to me for decades now,” he said. "I think that loyalty goes both ways, it should be a two-way street. You guys support me. I gotta support you."

McFarlane also mentioned that while public companies are obligated to maximize profits, he is not, and that gives him the freedom to do what he will with keeping prices low.
