Even as the dust settles on the purchase of Diamond Comic Distributors by Ad Populum — a purchase that was accompanied by widespread layoffs cross the company — the aftermath of the bankruptcy of one of the comic and gaming industries’ leading distributors continues to impact retailers in unexpected ways. The latest development: Mega Man and Street Fighter comic publisher UDON Entertainment announcing that all existing orders stores have made through Diamond are cancelled, effective immediately.
A notice was sent May 29 to retailers that all product from UDON and its sister company Manga Classics Inc. should consider “outstanding orders for new, upcoming, or even existing products” cancelled, with stores needing to place new orders with other distribution partners if they want those orders fulfilled; what this means for comic stores is that Lunar Distribution will be fulfilling orders for comic stores in the US moving forward, including existing or previously advertised product scheduled for May through August release. Collected editions, art books, and Manga Classics titled can be ordered through Simon and Schuster, as per UDON.
A statement accompanying the announcement from UDON Chief of Operations Erik Ko read, “With the current state of uncertainty and lack of communication from the new owners to both retailers as well as many publishers, we have to do what is best to serve our customers. We realize this is a deep inconvenience for many retailers, but we’re trying to do our best to serve our partners and fans, while minimizing risk and moving forward in an uncertain time.”
Additionally, UDON released a statement intended for fans, which read, “We’re sorry for all of the uncertainty and stress that the ongoing Diamond bankruptcy situation is causing you! We hope to continue to make our comics and books available to you with little-to-no interruption. The best thing you can do is remind your local comic shop that you want our comics, and that they are available through Lunar Distribution and Simon & Schuster!”
UDON’s announcement also followed a court filing by publisher Dynamite Entertainment on May 27, in which that publisher asked the court to expedite payment for $509,114.21, which Diamond Comic Distributors has not paid for stock shipped since the company filed for bankruptcy in January 2025. That’s entirely separate from the $158,820.93 it owed Dynamite upon filing for bankruptcy. As of writing, Dynamite Entertainment titles remain available for distribution through Diamond.
