Crunchyroll's manga app died today - we found out the probable cause

After almost a year of decline, the Crunchyroll Manga app is finally going offline in December

Manga readers are going to have one fewer option to get their fix next month, as Crunchyroll is shutting down its manga distribution service on December 11. Despite launching over a decade ago, the Crunchyroll Manga app will shut down for the final time, leaving fans needing to pick up yet another subscription service to keep up-to-date with many of the titles that the service had covered.

The writing was on the wall for the Crunchyroll Manga app, which confirmed over the weekend that the app would be shutting down next month. The service originally focused on carrying titles from Kodansha USA Publishing, but they set up their own app in May 2023 and removed their titles from Crunchyroll’s service as a result. This left Crunchyroll with only a handful of big titles to draw fans – and their monthly subscription – in, including the Genshin Impact and Honkai 3rd Impact manga adaptations.

In a statement to Anime News Network, Crunchyroll was quick to remind everyone that they could still read manga from the company, but they would have to purchase a physical copy of it from the Crunchyroll Store. This isn’t nearly as convenient or cheap for many fans, who are probably going to have to shell out for yet another app to replace this one. Manga readers outside the US are in an even worse position, as Kodansha’s K-Manga app, which carries many of the prominent titles on the Crunchyroll app, isn’t yet available in other countries, leaving a gap in many fans’ reading lists for the foreseeable future.
