We’re breaking down all of DC’s May solicitations, from Superman facing an army of Lobos, Batman and family dealing with more trouble in Gotham, and Wonder Woman’s ongoing war against the forces of Sovereign in the monthly comic releases — to say nothing about the launch of a new Robin series written and drawn by Juni Ba, the start of Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo’s final Nightwing story — to new collections including Tom King’s Mister Miracle with Mitch Gerads and a new collection of Kurt Busiek Superman stories. There’s another Tom King book that grabbed our attention, however.
Just weeks ago DC Studios hired House of the Dragon's Milly Alcock to play Supergirl in the armada of DC movies/TV projects James Gunn and Peter Safran. Now, DC is reprinting what it calls the character's "character-defining cosmic masterpiece for the ages" - written by someone who is in Gunn's writers room for those DC movies and TV shows.
Tom King and Bilquis Evely's 2021 miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomrorow - think of it like True Grit in space, with the added benefit of a superdog (for a brief moment, at least) - is being reprinted in a bigger, better format DC calls 'Deluxe Editions.'
Back during the series' serialization, King described Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as an "All-Star Superman take on the character. An ambitious epic to show again why Supergirl is stands proudly, uniquely at the heart of DCU and really at the heart of all comics. I love it."
That's especially apt, as Gunn is using Frank Quitely's cover to All-Star Superman as his promotional image for 2025's Superman: Legacy film, where Supergirl is anticipated (although not confirmed) to appear.
This deluxe edition of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will feature all eight issues of the series, a new introduction by King, a new cover by Evely, an alternate script for the sixth issue, and "a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes artwork" according to DC.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow - The Deluxe Edition will be available July 23, 2024 - just in time for Comic-Con International: San Diego. Coincidence? I think not.
