Most detective stories start with someone’s death, but most don’t involve the death of the actual detective. Dead Boy Detectives, based on the comic book by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, is the exception to that rule. The first season of the Netflix adaptation is quickly approaching, bringing new mysteries to solve for the two dead detectives. Here’s what we know about the Dead Boy Detectives release date and what do we know about it so far.

Despite being based on a DC comic, Dead Boy Detectives won’t be on Max with the other DC shows and films. Instead, it will be on Netflix and, according to Gaiman himself, will be set in the same universe as the streamer’s Sandman adaptation. All eight episodes of Dead Boy Detectives season one will premiere on Netflix on April 25, 2024. It follows the adventures of two young men who have died but choose to forgo their place in the afterlife to solve supernatural crimes together.

The reason for the change in platform is mostly due to Max wanting to simplify their comic book offerings. Their goal is to keep any DC shows on their platforms in the new shared universe that will begin with James Gunn’s upcoming Superman reboot. That means that Dead Boy Detectives needed to find a new home and Netflix was happy to swoop in and grab it.

However, that doesn’t mean that Dead Boy Detectives isn’t still connected to some of Max’s DC shows. It began life as a spinoff from Doom Patrol, where main characters Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland first appeared. However, the pair have since been recast for their new adventures on Netflix. George Rexstrew will play Edwin and Jayden Revri will play Charles when Dead Boy Detectives debuts on April 25, 2024 on Netflix.
