Flash Gordon is one of the world's first superheroes, and a new graphic novel is aiming to bring him to be one of the next generation's first superheroes as well.
The creative team behind DC's Tiny Titans and Dark Horse Comics' Itty Bitty Hellboy are working on an all-ages graphic novel series titled Flash Gordon Adventures, by Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani.
"Join Flash Gordon, Dale Arden, Dr. Zarkov and their allies from the planet Lexray as they battle the evil tyrant, Ming the Merciless," reads the series description from Papercutz and Mad Cave Studios. "Readers will be thrilled by Flash Gordon and his friend’s zany adventures, while enjoying valuable, but humorous life lessons about friendship, teamwork, how alien-world gravity affects the digestive system, why a lizard machine is important for making new lizards, and why Zarkov develops a way to make fake beards for Ming."
According to Art Baltazar, he's been training for this since watching the Flash Gordon serials as a child with his dad.
"Flash is cool space adventuring swashbuckling hero and he did it first!" says Baltazar. "When Papercutz announced Flash Gordon, I was like, dang I know that guy. I can make some cool comics with him. So they asked and I said YES!”
Baltazar's long-time partner Franco Aureliana agrees.
“I am beyond thrilled to be working with Papercutz! I’ve heard such good things and am excited to get the chance to show them what I can do with Flash Gordon Adventures!" adds Aureliani. "I remember the comics, cartoon and movie from when I was a kid, but now I get the chance to put my own creative effort into telling some truly unique and funny stories that I don’t think have ever really been done with Flash, Dale and the rest of the cast of characters! It’s going to be a fun ride and I hope everyone comes along and gets their funny bone tickled!”
Papercutz editor Adam Wallenta says Flash Gordon Adventures "is the perfect introduction to the legendary hero for a new generation of kids and young readers. Lifelong fans and older readers will also enjoy the humorous spin on Flash, Dale, Dr. Zarkov, Ming and the entire cast of colorful characters."
Flash Gordon Adventures goes on sale November 26, 2024, and is available for pre-order on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Bookshop.
