Furiosa's age rating could be a hard R if we look at past Mad Max movies
A lovely but bloody day.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hasn't received its age rating yet, but we can guess what it'll be based on past entries of the Mad Max series.
The first glorious trailer for the long-anticipated Mad Max: Fury Road prequel teases lots of sandy thrills and explosive chases, but official word on what rating it'll receive isn't here yet. We can take a pretty good guess if we look at the older Mad Max movies though, and we're breaking it all down below. Of course, as soon as the official ratings are confirmed ahead of the May 24, 2024, release date, we'll update this article.
What rating are the Mad Max movies in the US and UK?
- Mad Max: The original 1979 movie was rated R/TV-MA in the US and 15 (suitable for only 15 years and over) in the UK after the 2015 re-rating. While not extremely intense, the first Mad Max is largely a mature action movie that features some profanity, extensive use of alcohol, drugs, and smoking, and strong violence, plus occasional nudity.
- Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior: The 1981 sequel was rated R/TV-MA in the US and 15 in the UK after the 2015 re-rating, keeping in line with its predecessor. The movie features some profanity, use of alcohol, drugs, and smoking, and strong violence, plus occasional nudity.
- Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome: The 1985 threequel received a lower PG-13 rating in the US as the direct result of its bigger budget, making it more family-friendly. In the UK, however, the age rating remained a strict 15 because of some intense scenes and use of alcohol, drugs, and smoking, as well as occasional profanity.
- Mad Max: Fury Road: The 2015 reboot of the movie series might be the bloodiest and most intense so far. While it's not a gorefest, it earned a solid R rating in the US and the usual 15 rating in the UK because of mild bad language and female nudity, and of course, plenty of vehicular carnage and impactful violence.
What rating is Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in the US and UK?
Looking at past Mad Max entries, it becomes abundantly clear that the third installment, Beyond Thunderdome, is an outlier. The PG-13 experiment didn't pay off, and so Fury Road returned to the harsher, more brutal post-apocalypse that made the first two movies famous. With Furiosa set up as a direct prequel to 2015's reboot and the trailer looking pretty intense, we're betting on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga being rated R in the US and 15 in the UK. This, however, is pure speculation.
If you're hoping to catch this one in theaters with younger viewers, stay tuned for official ratings, which should drop in the coming months.
