The eleventh game in the ever-popular Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise is jumping back in time, and looking to the origins of one of the scariest monsters (and most super creeps) of the series, with Sony’s State of Play livestream debuting the first trailer for, and announcing the release date of, Five Nights at Freddy's: Secret of the Mimic.

The teaser for the game noticeably name drops the disappearance of Edwin Murray, a name that might catch the attention of the FNAF faithful, having appeared in two earlier spin-off novels building out the larger backstory of the franchise. Sure enough, he’s canonically the creator of The Mimic, the animatronic threat at the center of the 2021 Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach game.

This time out, the player won’t be handling the security guard role, however; instead, the voiceover of the trailer explains, “Your job is simple. Enter the warehouse and retrieve the technology he was developing for us. It’s a kind of prototype endoskeleton and can adapt to any costume and become any character.” Sounds dangerous? Well, sure — it’s a FNAF game. “We fully expect the retrieval process to go smoothly and without incident,” the voicemail from Fazbear Entertainment promises, almost certainly with its fingers crossed while saying so. (They do, after all, suggest that you get your affairs in order before too long, just in case.)

The official description of the game, courtesy of developers Steel Wool Studios, is, “In Five Nights at Freddy's: Secret of the Mimic, navigate the shadowy Costume Manor and uncover the secrets of Edwin Murray's unfinished invention: the elusive and menacing Mimic animatronic.”
