For the Switch 2, Nintendo is making sure scalpers don't have all the fun

The Switch was plagued by production issues in its early days, something that Nintendo says won't happen with their new console.

Back in March 2017, Nintendo launched what was arguably their most successful gaming system to date. The Switch combined the mobility of a handheld with the big screen experience of a home console and quickly became a bestseller. It was so successful that nobody could seem to get their hands on one due to scalpers and production issues. It took years for supply to meet demand for the Switch, something Nintendo is keen not to repeat with the Switch 2.

Nintendo’s president spoke to Japanese publication Nikkei (translated by VGC) following the company’s latest financial results and wanted to assure fans that they had learned from the launch of the Switch. “We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date (regarding scalpers and the like).”

The most likely answer to the scalper problem is, of course, to ensure that there are enough Switch 2s to meet demand. If retailers have enough units to sell, there will be less of a market for scalpers to sell the Nintendo console for profit. Furukawa said back in July 2024 that this was the tactic Nintendo would be taking. “As a countermeasure against resale, we believe that the most important thing is to produce a sufficient number to meet customer demand,” he said at the time.

Considering how popular the Switch has proven and the intense appetite among fans for the Switch 2, Nintendo will have to work very hard to keep up with demand when their new console launches. The goal seems to be to put as many Nintendo Switch 2s in gamers' hands as possible so the scalpers have no one to sell to.
