When you think about collectible card games, properties like Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering immediately come to mind. However, there was a time when a third name would get thrown into the conversation of games that were carrying the CCG community into the future. Marvel OverPower, which was launched in 1995, was a very popular game in the hobby until it was discontinued in 2001. However, fans can take heart in the fact that Marvel OverPower is making a comeback with a new publisher and some of the key figures from the game’s past returning.

Ron Perezza, who served as creative director for Marvel’s trading card division at the time when they developed OverPower in the mid-90s, announced the revival of the CCG on LinkedIn while giving some insight into why support for the game dried up at Marvel. “When Marvel faced bankruptcy in the 1990s, production on OverPower came to an abrupt halt,” he explained. “It seemed like the game had reached its end. But the story wasn’t over. For 25 years, the dedicated OverPower community kept the spirit of the game alive. They organized tournaments, refined the rules, introduced fan-made cards featuring beloved characters, and – above all – they continued to play.”

That dedication looks like it will finally be rewarded as Lazarus Rising Games acquired the rights to OverPower last year. Perezza called it “a true comeback story” as he announced that he will be joining the advisory board for OverPower at Lazarus Rising Games. As one of the original creatives behind the game, his presence helps ensure that the future of OverPower is respectful of the game’s roots. “I couldn’t be happier to see OverPower thriving once again, and I’m thrilled to play a role in shaping its future.”
