Video games love to show the magic that is hiding just around the corner and strange creatures that exist just out of sight. While European folklore has been explored frequently, the folklore of Southern America is finally getting its time to shine as South of Midnight makes its way to PC and Xbox consoles later this year. We’re less than two months from South of Midnight’s release date and we’re excited to dive into the Deep South’s mysteries.
South of Midnight will be released on April 8, 2025 and will follow the main character, Hazel, as she is pulled into a Southern Gothic world filled with mythical creatures. The focus is heavily on the American South’s rich folklore, with music inspired by the region’s diverse history. Hazel must master her new Weaver powers to uncover her family’s past and defeat creatures called Haints as she finds a place that feels like home.
After the critical and commercial success of We Happy Few and Contrast, Compulsion Games was purchased by Xbox Game Studios. South of Midnight marks the first game developed under their new ownership. The game’s unusual setting and dedication to an underexplored mythology certainly help it stand out among the countless other games coming to Xbox and PC in the coming months. South of Midnight still uses the distinct character design that has helped Compulsion Games make a name for themselves in the past nine years.
South of Midnight is out on April 8, 2025 for PC and Xbox consoles.
