Star Wars finally dives deep into pod racing 25 years after The Phantom Menace with Beyond Victory, debuting at Celebration Tokyo

The new VR experience (and Marvel comic book!) will be available for fans at Star Wars Celebration Tokyo in April

While everyone is waiting for updates on future movies and television seasons of beloved properties like The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and whatever the New Jedi Order movie ends up being called, an entirely new Star Wars franchise will be introduced to fans at the upcoming Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Japan — but it’s not one that will show up on either Disney+ or the big screen.

Star Wars: Beyond Victory - A Mixed Reality Playset, the latest VR experience set in a galaxy far, far away, will debut at the show as both a playable demo and an exclusive Marvel comic by Ethan Sacks, Will Sliney, Steven Cummings, and Shogo Aoki available only at the show itself. Set in the era of Solo: A Star Wars Story — which is to say, roughly the prequel era — the game is arguably something Star Wars fans have been waiting decades for: a chance to pod race for yourself, as new character Volo Bolus teams up with Episode I’s Sebulba to dominate the pod racing circuit.

To be launched for Meta Quest headsets, Beyond Victory is currently in development by Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic… but those attending this year’s Star Wars Celebration at the Makuhari Messe convention center will be able to experience it for themselves at the ILM and Meta Quest activation in Hall 4, booth #20-5.

“We’re beyond excited to share an early look at this new experience with the incredible Star Wars community at Star Wars Celebration this year,” director Jose Perez III said in a statement abut the project. “Our goal at ILM has always been to find new and exciting ways for players to experience Star Wars stories. Focusing on mixed reality has opened several fascinating doors from an immersion standpoint and allows us to literally bring a galaxy far, far away right into the comfort of players’ homes in a way that’s unlike anything we’ve done before.”

Now this, finally, is pod racing... as long as you're in Tokyo between April 18 and 20.
