2025 is starting with a setback in the ongoing war against the Decepticon threat, as game developer Splash Damage has announced that it is no longer developing console game Transformers: Reactivate.
In a message posted on social media, the studio stated, “This decision did not come lightly, and it is a difficult time for the studio and our people. We want to take a moment to thank the team who worked on Transformers for their dedication and passion. Hasbro was an incredible and supportive partner throughout, and we hope to work with them. To the many fans, your excitement and support helped keep us going.”
No reason was given for the decision, but the statement did reveal that as a result, the company may be looking at redundancies as it is faced with the likelihood of downsizing.
“We will be scaling down to refocus our efforts on other projects,” the statement explains, adding, “While not being able to see the game through to release is painful, having to say goodbye to friends and colleagues hurts even more. We’re not focused on doing everything we can to support them through this tough period, just as we are committed to caring for those who will stay with us as we build a stronger Splash Damage for the future.”
As initially announced in September 2022, Transformers: Reactivate was intended as a multi-player online action game for PC and consoles. The description of the game read, “The gravest threat to humanity has arrived. And it’s already won. Earth is no longer ours; it belongs to them. All we have left is our hope for the Autobots, as we salvage them from the rubble left behind.” Players would be given the chance to play as the Autobots themselves, in both vehicle and robot form. It was originally intended to launch in beta form in 2023.
