Humanoids and Ilias Kyriazis ask readers to remember (and fear) their childhood wishes in new graphic novel

The new graphic novel asks what would happen if your childhood dreams came true decades later

As the saying goes, we should be careful of what we wish for — an aphorism that comes to life in an all-new way in a new graphic novel from cartoonist Ilias Kyriazis and publisher Humanoids in summer 2024.

When a group of kids make wishes for their dreams to come true on the night a comet passes overhead, they’re disappointed when nothing happens… until 35 years later, when the comet returns and everything starts to come true. Of course, who dreams of the same perfect life more than three decades later…? Faced with dealing with their childhood fantasies come true, the adults have to face up to the unexpected — and, in some cases, maybe deadly, consequences and find a way to deal with their new lives moving forward.

This wild premise is the focus of What We Wished For, a new graphic novel from Greek cartoonist Ilias Kyriazis, who has previously created the romantic comedy Falling for Lionheart for IDW, the fantasy thriller Melody for DC’s short-lived Zuda imprint, as well as the crowdfunded Elysium Online. Beyond those projects, Kyriazis has worked on Collapser with Mikey Way for DC’s Young Animal, Cat Fight with Andrew Wheeler for IDW, and Secret Identities with Jay Faerber & Brian Joines for Image Comics.

“What We Wished For is very personal to me,” Kyriaszis said in a statement about the project. “It’s a story I had in my mind ever since I first started thinking about the passage of time and the possibility of not all my dreams coming true. It took me years to feel ready but it’s time to reach out with my comics and attempt to connect with everyone who feels the same.”

The graphic novel will be released in July 2024. Check out the full cover and an excerpt below.
