Former Marvel CCO Joe Quesada files trademark for a new comics brand

Joe Quesada is beginning a new chapter in his life post-Marvel, and he promises it'll be "amazing"

Former Marvel editor-in-chief/chief creative officer Joe Quesada announced his departure from the House of Ideas three months ago, with unspecified plans for the future that he promised was "going to be amazing!" (That's his emphasis, not ours.)

And apparently he was being literal.

Earlier this month, Joe Quesada has filed for a trademark and wordmark for the name 'Amazing Comics' with the US Trademark Office, including a logo. With a name like Amazing Comics, yes comics are a part of it - but also some other things. Here's the goods and services listed "Cards, Coloring books; Comic books; Comic strips; Posters; publications namely, printed periodicals in the field of comic book stories and artwork; Printed visuals in the nature of comic book stories and artwork; Series of fiction books; Stickers; Trading cards."

It's not clear if this is an active plan, or something for the future. But filing for a trademark does cost money.

"Amazing" is, of course, the choice adjective for Marvel Comics' Spider-Man, but the publisher can't trademark an adjective. Quesada's Amazing Comics will be running concurrent to a California retail comics chain named Amazing Comics & Cards. Amazing Comics & Cards has been in business for over 30 years, and Popverse has confirmed is unrelated to Quesada's Amazing Comics.

Quesada has also trademarked his name, "Joe Quesada."

So what is Quesada up to? In his departure from Marvel back in August, he said "I won’t ever be too far away, cheering my Marvel family on and contributing from time to time, including something I’m thrilled about for later this year. I also have several insanely cool projects of my own that you’ll be hearing about in the coming months, including a short indie film I’m writing and directing. Stay tuned!"

Those Marvel projects are still happening - in fact, here's two panels from it Quesada shared in recent weeks on Twitter.

IF Amazing Comics is indeed a new comics company, this wouldn't be Quesada's first go-around; from 1994 through 1999, he and Jimmy Palmiotti were co-founders and co-owners of Event Comics, which published such titles as Ash, Painkiller Jane, and 22 Brides. It was through Event Comics that Quesada ended up at Marvel, with the indie publisher contracted by Marvel to oversee an imprint that was eventually became Marvel Knights. It's unlikely that Amazing Comics would have a similar fate, but stranger things have happened...

On his Facebook bio, Quesada has updated it to read "Writer, Artist, Director, Producer. II make stuff up. Sometimes I get paid to do it!"

In the months since his departure from Marvel, Quesada has appeared at both Fan Expo Chicago and Fan Expo Boston.

Tip of the hat to Bleeding Cool's Rich Johnston, who originally posted much of this information on Tuesday morning. We'd link to the article, but it appears the article was removed from the Bleeding Cool website entirely.

Popverse has independently confirmed the reporting, and reached out to Quesada for comment.
