The new title and cover for the third book in Rebecca Yarros's Empyrean series that started with the acclaimed Fourth Wing has been revealed - and, if the looks are any indication, it may very well be the darkest book in the series yet. Check out the cover of Onyx Storm for yourself below.

Revealed July 7 by TODAY, what you're looking at above is the Deluxe Limited Edition of the novel, which features "sprayed edges, stenciled artwork and more design features." And though that's exciting in itself (if somewhat tantalizing: what, pray tell, are the "more design features" being teased?), what we're especially interested in is the look of the cover itself, which seems to signal a shift toward a darker tone for the dragon-riding, magic-wielding, love-triangle-building book series.

The cover is noticably more grim than its two predecessors; it's gunmetal black and stormcloud gray, as opposed to the gold and fire-red of Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, respectively. The tagline at the top, too, bodes ill for main character Violet Sorrengail, as it simply reads "Brave the Dark."

What that dark could be is anyone's guess right now, but there are a few likely contenders that will, for certain, require some bravery. Not to spoil anything here, but if you're finished Iron Flame, you know Yarros has set Sorrengail and Co. up against some dragon-sized odds.

The third Empyrean novel hits shelves January 21, 2025, but you can preorder the Deluxe Limited Edition of Onyx Storm on Amazon now.
