Fans of Netflix’s The Witcher might be preparing to say goodbye to Geralt of Rivia with the show’s end in the upcoming fifth season (Don’t worry; we’re still waiting for the release of the fourth, so there’s some time to go yet), but in the series’ original medium, the story is going back to its beginning; the newly announced Crossroad of Ravens novel will flash back to a teenage Geralt, according to the character’s creator, Andrzej Sapkowski.
English language rights to the book — the ninth book in the series, which began back in 1992 — have been purchased by Hachette Book Group’s Orbit imprint, with the intent to release the book simultaneously with 19 other publishers worldwide this September.
In a statement, Polish author Sapkowski said of the new title, “In Rozdroże Kruków [the original Polish language version of the title], I return to the roots of Geralt’s journey — not the fearless monster slayer we know, but a young Witcher just beginning to understand the burden of his destiny. Imagine Geralt, but younger, with fewer scars and a bit more haughtiness. This is a story of growth, of idealism meeting harsh reality, and of choices that forge a legend. It’s about finding your place in a world that’s constantly challenging you to be more than you thought you could be.”
Orbit’s official synopsis of the book calls it “a perfect entry point for new readers and an unmissable must-read for longtime fans,” adding that, "Geralt will discover monsters, traitors, some new friends and some familiar faces, and just how deeply feared and despised Witchers can be.”
Crossroad of Ravens will be released September 30.
