The Two Doctors: David Tennant discusses his friendship with fellow Doctor Who alumni Matt Smith

Tennant has a lot of good things to say about his fellow Time Lord

In 2013, BBC One aired the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, and our minds were blown. ‘Day of the Doctor’ brought back former series lead David Tennant, teaming him up with Matt Smith. It was a special experience for the fans, and according to one particular Doctor, it was a special experience for the actors too.

During a spotlight panel at Florida Supercon, David Tennant reminisced about the experience. “He [Smith] was awful! Terrible,” Tennant joked.

“No, he was lovely! It was quite nerve-wracking going back. That was when we did the 50th anniversary, and it was Matt's show. Going back is quite weird, because you think I sort of know this quite well. It's kind of my territory. It's kind of my manor. And yet, it's absolutely not. It's this guy's now.”

Tennant went on to say that he enjoyed the way their versions of the Doctor played off one another.

“That could have been really difficult if Matt had some sort of monstrous ego, which he doesn't have at all. He couldn't have been more welcoming and more fun to play with. We just really enjoyed it. We enjoyed finding things that the Doctors would do together. I think our two Doctors quite liked each other, and I think that we've pretty much leaned into that. It was great. He was a joy to be around. I hope we get to do something similar for the 70th anniversary.”

The 70th anniversary of Doctor Who is in 2033. I hope we don’t have to wait that long to see Smith and Tennant onscreen together again. Even if we do, I have a feeling it will be worth the wait.
