The original UK version of sitcom Ghosts may have passed away — so to speak — but two of the series’ creators were on stage at MCM x EGX 2024 this weekend to talk about the surprising legacy of the show now that it’s over… which is to say, they all still want to hang out in Button House.

“It’s still odd. You get to that time of year, and you start gearing up for it,” Laurence Rickard said when asked if it was strange to no longer have the show’s production on his calendar each year. “You get to this time of year and you start gearing up to start messing around in a big house, and you go, ‘nope. You can’t.’”

Rickard’s co-creator Mathew Baynton agreed. “There’s a feeling like, you ought to be there from January to March. It’s unrealistic if you’re not making a TV program, to randomly just turn up to a stately home for three months.”

For those wondering, Button House is actually West Horsely Place, a 15th century protected building in Surrey, England. It’s also been used in both the Netflix movie Enola Holmes, and The Crown. No wonder people want to hang out there.

Rickard explained why the team brought the show to an end last year after five acclaimed seasons. (The show’s final episode was a Christmas Special, broadcast Christmas Day 2023.) Ending the show was, he admitted, “a weird decision,” explaining, “It was a case of, we talked about it like, ‘what was best for the child,’ you know. As a parent, we were like, ‘let’s just do this forever, it’s a lot of fun,’ but we didn’t want to end up compromising on the quality, or re-treading old ground.”

It’s the classic British sitcom rule of exceptionally short runs — the UK Ghosts lasted just 34 episodes, which the US version surpassed midway through its second year — but there’s a lot to be said for knowing when to bring things to a close.

Ghosts US still airs on CBS every Thursday. MCM x EGX 2024 continues through October 27 at the London ExCel. We’ll be reporting from the show all weekend.
