Netflix's The Electric State feels like the robot rebellion episode Futurama with an MCU budget

Fans who managed to get into The Electric State panel at MCM London were treated to an early look a the highly anticipated Netflix movie directed by the Russo Brothers and starring a host of MCU actors. The footage shown certainly had a Marvel-sized budget behind it, but it reminded us of a significantly more animated origin story. While the Russo Brothers insist that they were inspired by the graphic novel of the same name, The Electric State feels more like a certain episode of Futurama with a massive budget.
As we watched the exclusive “You had to be there” clip of The Electric State on the MCM London Main Stage, we couldn’t help but feel like we had seen this before. Then it hit us: the season two episode of Futurama called Mother’s Day – the one where Bender and the rest of the robots decide to rebel against humanity until Mom is installed as Supreme Overlord of Earth. It is one of the most memorable episodes of the series, so we don’t blame the Russo Brothers for borrowing a bit from it.
The plot of The Electric State has plenty of similarities to this classic episode, but the tone of the clip is also strikingly similar as well. Just like in Futurama, the robots first rebel by withholding their labor from humanity and then by more violent means of resistance. The image of Mr. Peanut (in this case voiced by Woody Harrelson) as the leader of the robot uprising didn’t help the similarities.
Add in the cartoonish design of the robots in The Electric State and we can’t be blamed for spending the whole clip expecting Bender to come in and offer to destroy all humans. (He didn’t but we can still live in hope) Heck, even the prop robot on the side of the stage called humans “meatbags” at one point in the panel.
We’re not saying all this is a bad thing, though we’re not sure if an early 2000s Fox cartoon is the vibe the Russo Brothers were going for when they made The Electric State. We just think that Futurama fans will feel at home in this movie when it comes to Netflix in March.
