Josh Brolin says he’s open to coming back to the MCU as Thanos

Josh Brolin’s role as Thanos in the MCU was a watershed moment in pop culture, and the actor hinted at New York Comic Con that he may still be inevitable.

Don't miss New York Comic Con 2024, happening October 17 through 20. Popverse is here all four days, immersing ourselves in the pop culture party full of vendors, events, and celebrities from the worlds of comics, movies, TV, gaming, and more.

The MCU is in a state of flux right now. Robert Downey, Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom for the upcoming Secret Wars film. Since the news broke of RDJ’s return at San Diego Comic-Con this year, fans have speculated that Josh Brolin could return as Thanos for the same film.

In his spotlight panel at New York Comic Con 2024, Brolin addressed the rumors directly. The actor said, “I’ll do anything the Russos want me to do,” referring to Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors behind Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and the upcoming Secret Wars film. Brolin expressed his trust in the Russo Brothers’ competence as directors, and stated that as long as the story felt right for Thanos to return, he was up for it.

Brolin has been killing it in his post-MCU career. He worked with Denis Villeneuve on both critically-acclaimed Dune films. The actor also starred in the beloved Amazon Prime Video series, Outer Range, which was tragically cancelled despite fans’ fervor. As much as we would love to see Brolin continue this trajectory with more daring projects, we can’t deny the excellent working relationship that the actor has with the Russo Brothers. Brolin’s Thanos may truly be inevitable, as he one said in the MCU.
