Don't miss New York Comic Con 2024, happening October 17 through 20. Popverse is here all four days, immersing ourselves in the pop culture party full of vendors, events, and celebrities from the worlds of comics, movies, TV, gaming, and more.

If you look at Joe and Anthony Rosso’s filmography, you’ll notice plenty of winners. The brothers have directed blockbuster fan favorites such as Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame. Now the directing duo have set their sights on another comic book adaptation.

The Electric State is based on a 2018 graphic novel from Simon Stalenhag. Speaking to a crowd at New York City Comic Con, the Russo Brothers broke down the premise of their upcoming Netflix movie.

“The Electric State is a big epic fantasy adventure,” Anthony Russo teased. “It’s set in an alternate version of the 1990s. It sort of reimagines our history as if AI robots existed much earlier than they will. And there was a war between humanity and these robots. And the movie basically takes place in the aftermath of this war where a girl who has lost her family in the war finds out her brother may still be alive, and she goes on the journey to potentially find her brother. She encounters some amazing help along the way.”

“I’m exhausted. That’s all I can say,” Joe Russo said. “We started working on this five years ago, so it’s been a long journey. But it’s a real passion project. We’re very excited to bring it to audiences.”

The Electric State will premiere on Netflix on March 14, 2025.
