Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is Aerith voice actor's game of the year (and would be even if she wasn't in it)

"I think it's just such a joy to play" Briana White says about FFVII: Rebirth, midway through replaying the game

It’s one thing to voice a character in a video game, but it’s another thing entirely to play that character in the game itself — but when it comes to Briana White, who voices Aerith in Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, she’s pretty happy to do either. In fact, she’s currently playing through Rebirth on her Twitch stream, and it’s only made her love the game even more.

“I just don't think I've ever played a game where it's so serious and such like, deep content, with the connection, with the characters, and the history, and the lore and the mystery of it,” White raved during the Suzie, Britt, and Briana's Voice Acting Panel: How We Got Started, How We Got Better, and Where We're Going panel at PAX West 2024 on Sunday afternoon. “Where you get to be a frog, or be a space ranger ship thing, or play piano and have to get a perfect score, and then you miss the very last note! I think Rebirth is really special because it's like a huge game, and you can see how much love is put into every single part of it, including the combat and the synergy, which almost feels like its own game in and of itself. So for Rebirth, I think it's just such a joy to play. It's really one of my favorite games. Even if I wasn't in it.”

Asked (only somewhat tongue-in-cheek) by co-star Suzie Yeung (Yuffie) if it was her game of the year — hey, the awards are just a few months away now — White said, “Even if I wasn't in it, I'd have to say yes. It is really good. It's so nice to be part of a project where the game is genuinely good! It's really nice. We can say good things about it and we're being honest!”

White’s joy in playing the game isn’t shared by all her co-stars; Britt Baron confessed to the crowd that she “can't play these games. I don't know how to do the camera thing, like with the second joystick. It's like, 'Oh, he's looking at the ceiling.’” She added, to laughter from the crowd, “And I'm on PC, so that's a me problem.”
