As if the expansion of San Diego Comic-Con into a five-day cruise wasn’t enough of a separation from, you know, the San Diego of it all — the cruise launches from and returns to Tampa, Florida, as opposed to San Diego… or anywhere in California, for that matter — now news emerges that San Diego Comic-Con is expanding again. And not just outside of San Diego, but outside of the U.S. entirely.
Thanks to a licensing deal facilitated by IMG Licensing, SDCC will be holding a second event this year in Malaga, Spain. The newly-announced event will be taking place September 25 through 28 of this year in the Gran Hotel Miramar in the city.
In a statement, Comic-Con International: San Diego’s David Glanzer said, “We’re very excited to celebrate comics and the popular arts and share Comic-Con’s unique spirit with audiences in Europe. Málaga is a city full of energy, creativity and warmth — exactly the kind of place we had in mind for this historic expansion.”
It’s the first time in SDCC’s 54-year history that the event has moved outside of the US; Comic-Con International, the non-profit organization that owns SDCC already produces WonderCon in Anaheim, California, in addition to the annual main SDCC event and Comic-Con: The Cruise.
Expect more news in coming months as to guests, programming, and ticket availability. The event already has a website, which allows interested parties to subscribe for updates.
