Mads Mikkelsen discusses the “almost kiss” between Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham from the Hannibal finale

“We got carried away,” Mads Mikkelsen admits

NBC’s Hannibal was the story of a friendship gone sour and the story of a rising serial killer. However, some would argue that it was also a love story. The relationship between Mads Mikkelsen’s Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Hugh Dancy’s Will Graham serves as the emotional backbone of the series. The two start off as friends, and their relationship takes many twists and turns throughout the series.

In fact, the series finale almost featured a kiss between the two leads, but it didn’t come to pass. During a Hannibal lookback panel at New York City Comic Con, Mads Mikkelsen was asked about the scene and the kiss that almost happened. “I think it was because of you guys,” Mikkelsen said to the audience. “You were pushing it all the time. We had nothing to do with it. I think that was it.”

“It’s better to indicate something than to actually do it, so it can make people’s imagination go crazy. But I would say that I see what you mean when you see the finale. We didn’t think about it when we did it. We got carried away, let’s put it that way.”

If the online reaction was any indication, then Mikkelsen was right, because viewer’s imaginations went crazy. Just take a look at the Hannibal section on FanFiction.net if you need any proof.
