Yes, the SpongeBob SquarePants cast have their own group chat, and they share SpongeBob memes

The SpongeBob cast discuss the legacy of SpongeBob memes

Popverse was there for all four days of New York Comic Con 2024, immersing ourselves in the pop culture party full of vendors, events, and celebrities from the worlds of comics, movies, TV, gaming, and more. If you’ve ever been in a group chat with friends, then chances are you’ve seen a lot of memes. However, it’s safe to say that you probably haven’t been featured in the memes. Unless you’re a member of the SpongeBob SquarePants cast. The long-running Nickelodeon cartoon has inspired dozens of memes, which have ended up in numerous group chats…..including the group chat between the SpongeBob cast members.

During a SpongeBob SquarePants anniversary panel at New York City Comic Con, the cast were asked if they had a group chat, and what it’s like to share memes of yourself. “We have group texts,” Carolyn Lawrence confessed. “Just like in person, when these guys get going, and they’re so funny, I can’t get a joke in. It’s so fun.”

Like most group chats, the SpongeBob cast share memes, even if some of the participants don’t understand them. “That’s another thing I don’t get. Memes. I’m old,” Rodger Bumpass said. Honestly, that’s on brand for the guy who voices Squidward.

“I don’t get it, but I send them to everybody,” Douglas Lawrence Osowski added.

“It’s a surreal experience like, if a friend’s having a birthday and you go on your phone and go down and you’re like, ‘Oh, I can send them me.’ It’s really bizarre, and fun, and fantastic,” Carolyn Lawrence said.

“I love the repurposing of the images,” Tom Kenny said. “That’s the part that I just think is so cool and hilarious. And I’m always blown away by the creativity of the people who make the memes and put them out there. They’re just taking an image and kind of repurposing it for like a funny feeling or a feeling that they have, or a moment that the drawing also fits, that might not necessarily be the original intent of the drawing. You know, I just think that’s so creative. It’s got community creativity.”

SpongeBob SquarePants is currently airing on Nickelodeon.
