Magic: The Gathering's Secret Lair has a new boss in town - and he's someone ultra familiar with Marvel & comics

Fresh off the heels of the Secret Lair x Deadpool drop, Wizards of the Coast has hired a gaming expert to join the team who's also a comics expert.

There's a new boss in town for Magic: The Gathering's Secret Lair sets - and he's someone Popverse knows very well.

Former comics journalist Steve Sunu has been hired as Wizards of the Coast's senior product designer for its highly-collectible, highly secretive Secret Lair set releases. For Sunu, it's promotion and a departmental transfer, moving over from being the company's senior manager of global product marketing - and boy does he know the product. In an office tour last year, Sunu knows MTG and what fans want more than virtually anyone I know - including the people I play with every Friday night, and those we've met from Magic Cons.

What does a Secret Lair senior product designer do?

Glad you asked! The Secret Lair senior product designer (also known as senior product lead) focuses on the "product design, creative vision, and business objectives" of the Secret Lair releases according to the job posting. He will lead the concept design and execution of the cards in the Secret Lair drops with WotC's designers, art directors, and copy writers in the Product Team as well as working with various other departments on the marketing and release.

With the recent Secret Lair Deadpool drop and some enterprising Universes Beyond releases like Final Fantasy and multiple Marvel sets forthcoming, I'll be watching what Sunu and the Secret Lair team do now even more closely.

Marvel and Magic the Gathering drop a surprise Deadpool set for April Pool's Day (No, that's not a typo).
