A single vampire would be absolutely horrifying in our world, but in the Marvel Universe? Not so much. So how to you create terror in a world full of superheroes? Well, if you're writer Jed MacKay and artist Pepe Larraz, you make the vampires super too. At least, that appears to be the concept behind the Bloodcoven.
Created for this spring's Blood Hunt event, which will see the Marvel Universe swarmed with nasty nosferatu, the Bloodcoven are a vampire supergroup with powers that allow them to go toe-to-toe with Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
In a press release sent out March 4, Marvel identified the members of the Bloodcoven as Megrim, Cruel, Unusual, the Damascene, Smoke Eater, and most terrifyingly, a Hydra-created Dracula clone called Bloodstorm One. Said writer MacKay of the sanguinous sect:
"I knew going in that vampires weren't bad enough. If the children of the night were going up against the Avengers, let alone the other heroes of the world, bigger guns were required [...] Hence the Bloodcoven - supervampires, fed on the blood of superhumans that follow different vampiric philosophies, subsisting not only on blood but pain, or magic, or thoughts, or even ghosts!"
He continues, "I threw together a list of names and some thoughts about powers, but it was Pepe who really brought these characters to (un)life, creating an extremely gnarly set of predators!
