New York City is the quintessential character in Marvel's Daredevil that should never be replaced or recast, says Vincent D’Onofrio

Filming in New York City has made Daredevil: Born Again a more authentic show

When you watch a superhero film set in New York City, most of the action is really being filmed on a soundstage thousands of miles away. For example, most of Marvel’s films like Avengers: Endgame are primarily shot in Georgia. However, the Marvel Netflix shows were different. Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Punisher, and Defenders were all filmed in New York City. The upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again followed the Netflix tradition by basing their production in New York City. This delighted Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Wilson Fisk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speaking to a crowd at Dragon Con, D’Onofrio mused about the important relationship Daredevil has with New York City. “It’s definitely a New York story. I’m a New Yorker, I still live in New York. As a New Yorker I know immediately when they’re shooting in Canada and pretending it’s New York. The city has a very distinct feel about it and it does help.”

In addition to helping the show feel more authentic, D’Onofrio feels like the setting helps inspire the writers and showrunner.

“It helps the writers and the showrunners write better. It helps them use the city as a character. It helps the art direction. It helps in so many ways to bring the tone and the feel of New York, and making it an actual character in Daredevil. We do the same thing in Daredevil: Born Again. It’s a spectacular place to shoot. And these characters are New York characters….Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock. It helps a lot.”

Daredevil: Born Again will premiere on Disney+ in March 2025.
