You’re 17 years old. You just convinced your parents to become a couple. It’s your last night in 1955. Now it’s time to rock and roll.
During the final act of Back to the Future, Michael J. Fox plays the guitar and sings Johnny B. Goode, bringing down the house…or so it seemed. Fox wasn’t actually singing or playing the guitar. That was dubbed in by studio musicians. However, Fox learned to play guitar so he could mime along with song, and as you can see in the finished film, he played his heart out.
During a Back to the Future spotlight panel at Fan Expo New Orleans 2025, Fox was asked about his favorite Back to the Future memory. The answer was easy. “It was the Johnny B. Goode scene. It was just a manifestation of everything that was important to me at that point. Chuck Berry was a hero of mine.”
“I know how hard the prop guys worked on that,” Fox continued. “The camera guys worked, and everybody worked so hard, and I know I busted my ass to get that song right. And if anybody did a tenth of what I did on this, they really worked their ass off. And it turns out they did ten times what I did.”
It’s like Marty says, if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.
Here's how to watch the Back to the Future movies (and TV series) in order.
