When you’ve been working in the MCU as long as Anthony Mackie has, you’d expect it to come with a few perks. Captain America: Brave New World not only marks the first time that Mackie has gotten top billing in a Marvel movie but the most involved he’s been behind the scenes. As Sam Wilson steps into the role of Captain America for the first time, Brave New World is also Mackie’s first producer credit on a Marvel movie.
According to the actor, it was something he pushed for because he recognizes the importance of Captain America not just to the MCU but for his career and image, but getting his first producer credit in a Marvel movie only came because he has worked with the studio since 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. “I’ve done a lot of these movies,” Anthony Mackie explained in a recent interview. “And one thing that’s very important to me is being able to have a say, being able to have an opinion, being able to be heard when it came to something as big and as important as this film and this character. So, Marvel heard that and they allowed me to be a producer on my movie.”
With the amount of pressure that comes from portraying Captain America on the big screen, it isn’t surprising that Anthony Mackie wanted to have more of a say in the story and the tone of Captain America: Brave New World. Considering he clearly has strong feelings about how Captain America represents more than just the nation he is from, he likely was a passionate voice on set to ensure the fourth Captain America movie reflected the modern world of the character.
