Anthony Mackie hated his Falcon and Winter Solider mask: "Never wearing that shit again"

Don't expect to see this Captain America don his cowl, even after Brave New World

Captain America's looks have changed over the course of the MCU; Steve Rogers went from a charming (if slightly dopey) USO outfit to his charred and shredded duds in the final battle against Thanos, and it looks like Sam Wilson's Cap is going to follow suit (heh) with a costume upgrade. But don't blame every change on Marvel's fictional baddies - at least one is due to actor Anthony Mackie's real-life problems with his suit.

In a recent interview promoting Captain America: Brave New World, Mackie was asked by IGN "Why did they take away your white, half-helmet look?" To which they got a very, very honest response.

"Because I told them that I was never wearing that shit again, dude," Mackie said with an exasperated smile, "That was hard. With the heat, the sweat, the fogged-up glasses, it was impossible. It was called a cowl. It was my worst nightmare. You can’t do anything."

Mackie wasn't the only comic book actor in the news recently for swearing off a piece of his costuming. Weirdly, he wasn't even the only one with a bit of a bird-motif. You'll recall Popverse's reporting on the fact that Colin Farrell, who wore a great deal of prosthetics for his role as Oz Cobb in The Penguin, also bemoaned what it took to get that comic book look on screen.

"When I finished [filming]," Farrell said, "I was like, ‘I never want to put that fucking suit and that fucking head on again.'"

Fortunately for Mackie, Captain America's looks change a heck of a lot more than do the Penguin's. But who knows - maybe Mackie's example will set a precedent, and season 2 of The Penguin (if it happens) will begin with a plastic surgery arc for Oz.

Captain America: Brave New World (and Sam Wilson's cowl-less look) comes to theaters February 14.

Consider this a meta post-credits scene for Marvel fans - the four key articles you need to read next to continue the thrills:

Grant DeArmitt

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. As Popverse's Staff Writer, he criss-crosses the pop culture landscape bringing you the news and opinions about the big things (and the next big things). In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
