With Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell back in the MCU for Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel may finally tell the Captain America story they cancelled after Endgame
The stand-alone Steve Rogers film was cancelled because the studio couldn't get the plot figured out, but Avengers: Doomsday is a chance to show us what we missed out on.

The news that both Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell would be returning to the MCU in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday broke last week, giving Marvel fans plenty to speculate over. While we don’t know if Evans is returning as Steve Rogers/Captain America in the upcoming team-up, the potential reunion between Captain America and Agent Peggy Carter is a chance for Marvel to finally tie off a loose end that has been bothering them for years.
With the pair returning to the MCU, it is an opportunity for Marvel to finally do the stand-alone Captain America movie that they tried to do after Avengers: Endgame that would have explored what Steve Rogers did between leaving the MCU's core timeline and returning as an old man to let Sam Wilson take over as the new Cap.
However, they struggled to get the story to work there, which is fair considering Endgame saw Steve Rogers pass the torch/shield to his successor before settling down for a quiet life in an alternate timeline with Peggy. When the studio couldn’t get the plot ironed out, it seemed that we wouldn’t get to see Steve Rogers and Agent Carter in action again.
We don’t know if Avengers: Doomsday is going to cover the same story that the aborted Captain America movie, but the fact that Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell are both in it is an opportunity to tie off a loose end that Marvel has been struggling with for years. What, exactly, did Steve Rogers get up to in his new timeline? Did he and Peggy try to enjoy a quiet life together or could they not resist the allure of adventure and heroism? While it is possible that Marvel is going to use the infinite possibilities of the multiverse to punk us, we think they’re more likely to use Avengers: Doomsday to give the couple the proper send-off they deserve.
