James Gunn confirms that the Clayface movie will be a body horror film for people who aren't necessarily DC fans
Gunn had no intention of making a Clayface movie in the DCU until he read Mike Flanagan's script.

Most of the iconic members of Batman’s rogues gallery have a tragic element to them. Two-Face was horribly scarred while trying to protect Gotham. The Riddler has an obsession with telling the truth that always undermines his grand schemes. However, Clayface may be one of the most tragic figures in Batman’s world. He was an actor who became a monster with no face of his own. That idea is the basis for the upcoming DC Clayface movie, which James Gunn promises will highlight the body horror aspect of the character.
During a chat with journalists about the upcoming slate of DC movies, Peter Safran and James Gunn discussed the upcoming Clayface movie. Safran characterized the movie as a “body horror film,” which makes sense considering the character’s grotesque appearance and ability to change his shape at will. Gunn explained that the goal is to make a movie that “works as a pure horror movie for somebody who doesn’t care at all about DC.”
The downside, however, is that the Clayface movie isn't going to have a familiar voice behind the character. Alan Tudyk, who has voiced the character in both the Harley Quinn animated series and Creature Commandos, won't reprise the role for the Mike Flanagan-penned movie. As Gunn puts it, the part wasn't a "primary role" for Tudyk in Creature Commandos, which takes place in the same continuity as the upcoming DC movies.
Now that they’ve found a director to bring Flanagan’s script to life, we expect the Clayface movie to start ramping up production quickly to meet its expected September 11, 2026 release date.
